Gluten-free, dairy-free peanut butter cookies

Here at the Inn we do our best to accommodate special dietary needs. Some of our guests can't have gluten, some can't have dairy - and on some occasions, like last weekend, we have both kinds of special diets in the house. The peanut butter cookies are a cinch to make and you don't need any special baking mixes, xanthum gum or soy milk.

Ingredients:

1 cup chunky peanut butter (I usually have an organic or natural peanut butter in the pantry)
1 egg, beaten
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder

Preheat oven to 350. Mix all the ingredients together - dough will be very sticky. Cover cookie sheet with parchment paper; drop dough in balls onto sheet. Using a fork (dip in water between cookies) flatten cookie dough with crosshatches. Leave some space between cookies for spreading.

Bake in oven for 15 to 18 minutes. They will not get very brown but will stay the tannish color of the peanut butter. Allow to harden for 2 minutes then move to wire rack to cool.

Enjoy them!!!

Crockpot Pork Chile Verde

Most of the ingredients

This is an updated post of my crockpot pork chile verde recipe, now with pictures!! It's not a breakfast recipe, but an easy and comforting winter dinner recipe. It's only relation to breakfast is that you should get it started in the crockpot after breakfast so it's ready at dinner time. I used a pork shoulder, but you could also use a pork butt or a chuck roast.

2 lb. pork shoulder
1 small shallot or onion
1 can diced tomatoes with chiles (mild or jalapeno, depending on your heat preference)
5 tomatilloes, papery skins removed, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp. kosher salt
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. sage
1 tsp. Mexican seasoning
1/2 Tbl. oregano
1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes (or more, to taste)
1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Trim the visible fat from the meat and stick it in the crockpot. Add shallot/onion, then tomatilloes, then tomatoes with chiles. Add spices. Stir it around a little to distribute the spices around the meat. Add chopped cilantro on top. Cover and cook on low heat for about 8 hours.

We had this for dinner with multi-grain tortillas, shredded cheese and sliced avocado. You could add other fixings like salsa, shredded lettuce or rice for a more substantial meal. My friend Shellie and her daughter Raquel added goronzola bits and pickled jalapenos on top. As prepared this had just a little spice - good for me - and Jim added hot sauce to his because he likes to sweat while he's eating Chile Verde. The recipe was adapted from Make it Fast, Make it Slow by Stephanie O'Dea. I should note that this chile verde is not as green as some, because we used red tomatoes in addition to the tomatilloes.

This weekend (January 13, 14 and 15) brings the jams and workshops of the Upper Potomac Fiddle Retreat to our little town, just in time for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. One of the featured performers at the Friday night concert is Elke Baker, a U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion. She's been teaching the Retreat since its inception 10 years ago. Since it was an incredibly balmy 50-ish degrees on New Year's Day, we braved the smattering of raindrops to take a walk on the C&O Canal Path downriver to Pack Horse Ford. While the C&O may be better known for biking its length from Cumberland, MD to Washington, DC, local Shepherdstonians use it for walking and jogging on a regular basis.

Because the leaves are off the trees, we had picture perfect views of the Potomac River and some of the sights on the Shepherdstown side of the river, like the Tobacco Warehouse. We walked to the historic marker for Packhorse Ford (the website has the inscription in an easier-to-read format). In the fall there is an annual walk across the river from Shepherdstown to the Maryland side, with a picnic afterwards.

"The Way" at the Shepherdstown Opera House

Jim and I just got back from taking in the Sunday afternoon showing of The Way, starring Martin Sheen and directed by his son Emilio Estevez (the one that didn't go off the rails this year). It was playing at the Opera House - one of our favorite ways to enjoy a Sunday afternoon sans check-ins is to have a late brunch at the Press Room and then have popcorn at the movies later in the afternoon. We call that dinner.

It turned out to be a wonderful way to spend two hours - a movie with meaning but without violence or gratuitous sex, with heart but without maudlin sappiness, with inspiration and faith but no doctrine or dogma. Ridiculously, I had a lump in my throat and wet eyes even as I smiled at the ending. Yes, there were predictable moments but none of the pilgrims' journey felt forced, and Sheen was a marvelously controlled soul for this film. He perfectly portrays a man on an unexpected journey (the pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago to the tomb of Saint James in Northern Spain) after the sudden death of his only son. "You don't choose a life, you live it" is the creed that Sheen inherits from his son.

If you're not lucky enough to have an independent movie theater like the Opera House showing this movie, it's also available on DVD. See it - you'll be glad you did.

Although I don't always agree with John, in this case I can say that he speaks for me and many, many of our neighbors and friends in describing the attractions of this little burg. Christmas in Shepherdstown - Dec. 10 & 11

You know that Christmas activities haven't stopped in Shepherdstown yet, even though the big parade was last weekend. This weekend, we still have a lot going on - The Nutcracker at the Frank Center performed by the Shepherdstown School of Music and Dance on Saturday and Sunday and holiday markets at both the Entler Hotel and the War Memorial Building with locally-made crafts and foods.

The Masons will hold a special open house at their lodge on German Street on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. with a Masonic apron owned by George Washington on display. It is one of only two aprons owned by Washington and is rarely displayed in public. During the same time on Sunday, Hali Taylor will be signing her book "On the Wall" at the Bridge Gallery.

We have several rooms open for just Saturday night at special rates- come on out for the holidays!

'Tis the Season

Everyone wants to be jolly during the holiday season, but it's not always easy. Traffic jams, pricey gifts, too many people in too-small spaces can make anyone feel more like the Grinch than a joyful Santa. Sugar Pine Realty has suggestions on "How to Deal with Holiday Stress".

My favorite one for today? "#4 - Take a break and get some fresh air." Our Christmas parade starts in less than an hour and I plan to be there - not walking in it, not organizing it, but just hanging out on the sidelines. Then I'm going to check out the ice sculptures on German St. And then I'm going to stop in the holiday markets for some Christmas greens. Work can wait for a few hours.

Apple Cranberry Compote

Here's another seasonal dish which makes use of local apples. It can be served warm as a fruit starter in the morning or as an after-dinner dessert. It has an easy streusel topping so you are not fussing with pastry.

The same recipe works well with other fruit combinations - I've used local peaches and berries in the spring and summer. Enjoy!!

Hot Apple Cranberry Compote

12 servings

8 cups chopped apples

1 16 oz. can whole berry cranberry sauce

1 Tbl lemon juice

½ cup sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp ground ginger

½ cup brown sugar, packed

2 cups old-fashioned oats

1 ½ sticks butter, softened

Combine fruit and lemon juice in lightly greased 3-quart baking dish; toss well. Pour sugar over fruit evenly.

Combine remaining ingredients, mixing well. Sprinkle over fruit evenly. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Can be made as individual compotes (12):

Spray individual ramekins with oil; mix fruit together in large bowl and fill each ramekin. Sprinkle 1 ½ tsp. sugar over each ramekin. Sprinkle topping over each ramekin; bake at 350 degrees for 30 – 45 minutes. Leftover topping can be stored in refrigerator.

Southwest Potata Strata

Here is a frequently requested recipe; I serve this hearty strata with a side salad of local greens simply dressed with olive oil, a fruity vinegar and some spices, and locally-raised link sausage.

Southwest Potato Strata

6 – 8 servings

2 cups shredded potatoes, southwest style (Simply Potatoes brand works best!)

1 ½ cups cheddar cheese, shredded

Spray a 9-inch round pie pan with non-stick spray. Combine potatoes and cheese and spread over bottom of pan.

3 eggs

1 1/2 cup milk

½ tsp salt

1 cup Bisquick

Mix together and pour over potato mix. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour – may be made in advance and refrigerated overnight.

For topping:

1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

½ Tbs chopped cilantro

six or eight roma tomato slices

Sprinkle cheddar, then cilantro on top of pie. Arrange tomato slices around edge.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake in the oven for 45 to 55 minutes or until set.

The Shepherdstown Men's Club Christmas Bazaar will be in the War Memorial Building (next to the library) and run by the Shepherdstown Men's Club. It will be open on Black Friday and Saturdays and Sundays through December 18. The Shepherdstown Holiday Market will be held in the Entler Hotel at the corner of German and Princess Streets on Saturdays through December 17 and on Black Friday. An Evening of Comedy with Mike Diesel

Comedian Mike Diesel Mike Diesel began doing stand-up comedy in 1988 in Washington DC avarious Open-Mics around town. He was just doing silly impressions back then, but it was enough to get him noticed by the owner of The Comedy Café in downtown Washington DC and Mike was asked to be a regular Host/MC. This was the beginning of what has now gone on to become a storied career. Mike has become a fantastic comic, tapping into stories of his youth as well as going after current day subject matter with a vengeance.

As posted by Richele over at Pretty in the Panhandle, Jalal Yoga - just two blocks down German Street above Mellow Moods, will have a free yoga class on Thanksgiving morning at 9:00 a.m. so you can be ready for the day. Just bring a canned good/donation for the Jefferson County Community Ministries or bring a friend who hasn't done yoga before.

In keeping with the spirit of the holidays, Jalal Yoga will also be offering Donation week from December 3 to December 9 with an end-of-the-week potluck dinner at Mellow Moods downstairs. Holiday Plays at local Theaters

Our local community theaters have put together a holiday lineup of plays and entertainment to take the edge off of holiday shopping.

The Full Circle Theater right here in Shepherdstown will do a one-man show, A Christmas Carol, the next two weekends through Sunday, December 4. The Apollo Civic Theater in Martinsburg, will have two offerings. Holiday Abracadabra on Saturday, November 26, is a evening of magical performers, with puppets, clowns and illusionists; A Christmas Carol, the Musical will be on tap the weekends of December 9th and 16th.

The Old Opera House in Charles Town will be bringing It's a Wonderful Life to the stage, adapted from the film by Frank Capra. The Mediterranean Cafe and Dish Bistro offer a discount for dinner if you show your ticket to your server.

Come on out to do some holiday shopping, have a good meal and see a show!

Thomas Shepherd Inn Chairs Take the Stage

Do the chairs at the right look familiar? They usually reside in our upstairs front hallway - some classic wingbacks. Tonight they will become famous in their own right, as they take the stage for the Rumsey Radio Hour, being performed at the Frank Center.

Well-known Rumsey cast member Mark Kraham (news director at WHAG-Hagerstown) and Phil Bufithis (as Dr. Raymond Lucas) will be sitting in the chairs for an interview sketch. Me? I'll be behind the scenes and out in front of the house, managing tickets and all that fun logistical stuff. It promises to be a good show, and we've sold out our tickets. If you didn't get them for this year, plan to buy early for the 2012 version, same time next year.

Lincoln-Douglas Debates Recreated in Harpers Ferry, WV

This weekend, Nov. 18 & 19, and the weekend of Dec. 2 & 3, The Rivalry by Norman Corwin will be performed at St. John's Episcopal Church in Harpers Ferry. This play highlights the drama of the Lincoln-Douglas debates in the 1858 election race for the Illinois Senate seat. There were seven in total, and all centered on slavery as the main topic.

A campaign quote from Abraham Lincoln is used as a tagline for the play: "When they talk, they can't think. And when they think, they can't talk. I will try not to be like them." Would that our current crop of politicians would make the same attempt!

Thursday Nights at O'Hurleys General Store

You've heard about the heritage music featured on Thursday nights at O'Hurley's General Store on the edge of Shepherdstown in this space before. The Great Hall on the side of O'Hurley's is transformed with dulcimer music and local voices singing to the rafters in front of a roaring fireplace - sometimes you find enthusiastic dancing as well!

Jay Hurley, the owner and a well-known figre around town for more than 30 years, was born in the room that he now sleeps in above the store. It's hard to find places where you can cross a threshold and step back in time like you can at O'Hurley's - you owe it to yourself to visit on Thursday night. Rumsey Radio Hour returns November 19

Pictured to your left are the Foley artists who will be performing at the Rumsey Radio Hour when it returns on Saturday, November 19 in a new venue, the Frank Center at Shepherd University.

What are Foley artists, you might ask? They are the people who make the background sounds that you hear on the radio and in film and TV. Mostly ambient noises, they help set the stage for the events that are being depicted and they enhance the auditory experience for the audience.

One of the particularly fun parts of watching the Rumsey Radio Hour (like Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion) live on stage is that you get to see the Foley artists recreating sounds you would otherwise only hear in the background. They use machine parts, props and even their bodies to make all sorts of sounds. A well-placed Foley sound really gets a laugh.

A fellow innkeeper (now retired) told me that when he stayed at other B&Bs on his travels, he always took one thing away from that B&B to use in his own place. Not physically took away, mind you - one idea that he could implement at his place. This is what he took from our Inn - a dish of Jolly Ranchers in the front hallway.

It seems silly, but it's just a little welcome to the Inn or a treat upon your departure. I have a pretty amethyst Fenton bowl (made in West Virginia) filled with the hard candies. I chose Jolly Ranchers because my father always kept a bowl of them in his office. I blame him for my inherited sweet tooth. Take one for the road the next time you visit the Inn! Or put a dish of your favorite treat in the entrance to welcome guests.

Opera House Live Really Rocks!

The Shepherdstown Opera House, our vintage movie and music theater, has announced a new partnership with Emerging Pictures and is showing some wonderful documentaries and foreign films this week to celebrate. Today (Sunday), you can see the subtitled French film Women on the 6th Floor, a comedy set in 1960.

Tomorrow (Monday), the two offerings are Being Elmo and El Bulli, both new documentaries. Being Elmo is getting rave reviews and is the story of the man behind the Elmo muppet and his home on Sesame Street. This would be an enlightening movie to see ahead of the release of the new Muppet movie with Jason Segel. El Bulli is a fascinating look behind the scenes of the famous avant-garde Spanish restaurant which has just closed. A perfect movie for the foodie in your life.

I want to see all of them! Please check out the Opera House's lineup for the upcoming weeks - in addition to the movies, new owner Larry Cumbo has Retro Wednesday (this week featuring our own Richard Dreyfus in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), the Tosca opera live from the Royal Opera House, and Sunday night football. There's a robust music schedule as well, with bluegrass star Peter Rowan appearing next Sunday. Farmstand Apple Soup Redux

With a few frosts under our belt, I've started to serve my Farmstand Apple Soup in the morning.

I bought new soup bowls this year - aren't they cute? I've linked to this recipe before, but that link is getting hard to follow since the InnCuisine blog is no longer so active. So, here it is in its entirety:

Farmstand Apple Soup

4 - 6 servings

1 lb. apples, peeled, cored and sliced (about 4 medium size apples)

This tastes best using local apples, a mix of tart and sweet.

1 ½ cups apple cider

1 ½ cups water

1 tsp. lemon rind

2 tsp. lemon juice

Sugar to taste

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

Place all ingredients and simmer until the apples are mushy. Puree in blender at low speed. Adjust seasoning and add sugar only if necessary. Serve hot. You may garnish bowls with a sprinkle of nutmeg and a swirl of vanilla yogurt if you like.

WV's Largest Sugar Maple Is in Shepherdstown

Did you know that all 50 states have Big Tree programs, and there is a National Registry of Big Trees? This year, the largest sugar maple has been found in Shepherdstown, WV, at the home of Diana Suttenfield's mother. Biggest means oldest, as well, so this tree has witnessed a lot of history in the area, from the Beeline March to meet George Washington, to the founding of Shepherdstown and through the Civil War battles at Antietam and Harpers Ferry.

You can read more about it in an article by our local newspaper. Next year they'll be looking for the biggest evergreen/pine tree, so get your entries ready!

B&Bs for Veterans

The Thomas Shepherd Inn is again participating in the B&Bs for Vets program (our third year) and will have three rooms for veterans on Thursday night completely free of charge. In addition, a few stores around town have donated items. Cheryl Gallery at Grapes and Grains, whose husband is a vet, donated a bottle of wine for each room, Phil Mastroangelo at Mellow Moods has given us certificates for a free beverage, and both Blue River and Tomandy jewelry are offering discounts for the vets.

The program was started by West Virginia B&Bs three years ago and we are very proud of our involvement. We received an industry award from PAII (Professional Association of International Innkeepers) and a standing ovation from our innkeeping colleagues at the 2011 PAII conference in Charleston,

SC for helping to spread the program across all 50 states and Canada through a website designed to let veterans know who was participating. I'm not usually much for being in the public eye but that was a moment of affirmation.

Storytelling and Breakfast

Breakfast is another opportunity to experience the communal atmosphere at our Inn. About 1/2 of the B&Bs we've visited offer a communal dining table; others have 2 or 4 tops for guests. We have a hybrid - 2 separate rooms, each with a 6 top, and you can sit for breakfast any time during the breakfast hour, rather than all at one designated time (different than previous owners). We consider making other changes but this seems to work best for guests and for the layout of the Inn.

Our guests often make new friends and linger in discussions over the breakfast table for some time. Some recent newcomers to the B&B experience say this is the most enjoyable part of the stay. Everyone has a story to tell. I follow a fellow West Virginia blogger who's a storyteller and poet by avocation, Granny Su - here's her take on storytelling for a living. Her last bit is what speaks to me: "To bring people together in a common bond, a shared moment of community". It's one of the reasons I like what I do.

Uncommon Common Space

We've had several guests in the last few weeks comment on the sizable amount of common space here at the Inn - two dining rooms, one big living room with three seating areas, a library, and in season, a spacious back porch. We've also had some guests who were new to the B&B experience ask us about socializing with other guests while at the Inn.

When we were looking to buy a B&B, we really wanted to find a place that had spacious common areas separate from our own living space. One, because when we travel, we like to have a place to hang out and read or chat, and two, we want guests to feel that they are not imposing on us (as owners) when using the space. Guests at our Inn use the dining rooms to play cards, sit in the living room in front of the fire with a hot mug of tea or cocoa, and visit the back porch on nice days with a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine. We can tell that we've had a happy house of guests when the common areas are well used by Sunday.

You can, of course, just enjoy the environs of your room and the things to do around Shepherdstown, only meeting other guests at breakfast. But if you like to meet other interesting people in a casual setting, we hope you'll plan a stay at the Inn and make good use of the generous common space for chatting and relaxing.

Christmas Shopping Already!

With the news that we will be able to get to see my niece Megan dance as Clara in the Nutcracker in Cincinnati the weekend after Thanksgiving, we are off to start our Christmas shopping for the trip. With a very specific request for some jewelry - Megan's twin Molly knows what she likes - and other gifts in mind we are off to peruse Plum today, with its new offerings of gold jewelry and the reliable standbys of hair accessories from Square Peg Meg and skateboard necklaces.

I've already placed one order at Four Seasons Books for nephew Matt and will be placing some more before the week is out, I'm sure. I think I will reprise my Shepherdstown shopping series, this time for Christmas and the holidays. What do you think?

Neon Art in the Windows of Shepherdstown

One way to tell that you have arrived at the Thomas Shepherd Inn after darkness falls is from the purple neon cat in our front dining room window, easily visible at night. Several windows along German Street have other neon displays, mostly of animals which have some significance to the homeowners, and we are often asked what the story is.

Truth be told, we don't have a real story. The neon sculptures have been popular here for some years and are made by a woman who sells them through Dickinson and Wait Craft Gallery, on German Street. The bulldog at the Trinity parish house reflects Pastor GT's pet, and Sandy has a hummingbird opposite our window housing the cat. We do own a gray tabby cat. We also are familiar with the story of hobo signs, where a cat signifies that a kind lady who will feed you lives here. But, if anyone can come up with a better legend, we are willing to listen.

New Chef at Bistro 112 (formerly Stone Soup Bistro)

Restaurants come and go in Shepherdstown, but in this case, the restaurant formerly known as Stone Soup Bistro has had a name change, a face lift, and a little restructuring. It is now called Bistro 112, the walls are lined with art to evoke a French bistro and a new chef is cooking a French-inspired menu.

We say 'oui' to the moules frites and the pasta bolognese! You can check out their menus online or here at the Inn when you check in. The Shepherdstown Chronicle profiled new chef Kelly Fitzgerald in today's newspaper.

What I Listen To...

My husband listens to music while he's working on his computer - sometimes Celtic music, sometimes classic rock like John Mellencamp, and currently Mark Knopfler. When I am spending a lot of time at the computer, I go for NPR. I like music, but I feel like I should get information while I'm working, and most of my computer time is work - sending confirmations, updating the website, doing the accounting, or sending emails for one of the various projects I'm involved with. I feel guilty if I'm not multi-tasking.

This morning I spent an hour organizing the program for the Rumsey Radio Hour - coming up on November 19. I brought up the NPR website, found the program listings for Fresh Air, and fired up the Joan Didion interview. What a great writer, and what a tragic time she's had lately, losing her husband and her daughter. But she still can find pleasure in the music at a concert. Looks like my husband has the right idea after all. Now where are those Springsteen CDs?

Chilled Peach Soup

I would be remiss if I let the summer peach season go by without sharing this recipe for chilled peach soup. It's super easy and our guests love it!

We get our peaches locally - Uvilla Orchards and Ridgefield Farms are our main sources. Seconds are okay for soup - the peaches don't have to look perfect before they go in the blender.

makes 4 servings

3 medium soft ripe peaches, chopped

1 cup peach juice

1/2 Tbl lemon or lime juice

1 cup vanilla yogurt

1 Tbl half&half, light cream or milk

1 Tbl honey

1/8 tsp ground ginger

Place all ingredients in blender and puree. Cover and chill for at least 3 hours. Garnish with fresh berries, sliced fresh unpeeled peaches, lime zest and/or mint.

Green Garlic and Spinach Crustless Quiche

We are well into our Blue Morning Farm CSA this year (yay Billy and crew!) and I am having fun every week finding ways to work the beautiful vegetables and herbs into our morning breakfasts at the Inn. Some of the veggies are pretty easy - we use the salad mix as a side to our hearty Southwest potata frittata - but sometimes I get something new. Last week that was green garlic. Mine looked a lot like the one pictured above - the link to the photo is from a wonderful restaurant, One Block West, in nearby Winchester, VA where the chef specializes in using local and seasonal foods.

I used my green garlic in a crustless quiche and included most of the spinach that accompanied the garlic in the CSA. Here's the recipe:

1 stalk green garlic, trimmed of tough green leaves and sliced thin.
spinach (equivalent of 1 bag)
12 oz. sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
7 eggs, beaten

Saute the green garlic in about a tablespoon of oil until softened, then add the spinach and wilt it.
Press spinach mixture to remove excess water and drain. Cool spinach.
Combine eggs and cheese with spinach and green garlic; pour into a greased 9 inch pie plate.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 40 minutes, until set.
Makes 6 slices - we serve it with sausage links and toast or a side salad.
Enjoy!

This Weekend in Shepherdstown - Live Theater, Oscar Films and Music

This weekend will be the final showings of the Sam Shepard classic A Fool For Love at the Shepherd University Theater Department's Studio Theater. Now's the time to see a classic Shepard play before his newest work debuts at the Contemporary American Theater Festival in July. We hear the student actor playing Eddie is an actor to watch out for.

The Shepherdstown Opera House continues showing The King's Speech and 127 Hours, both Oscar-nominated films. The Tom Principato Band will be performing live at the Opera House on Friday night as well. For music of a more classic variety, the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra will be performing on Saturday night at the Frank Center, brought to you by the Friends of Music.

March 4 and 5 in Shepherdstown - Theater, Jazz and a Stationary Mardi Gras Parade

Although it's still the calm before the season here in the Eastern Panhandle, there are a few events that might interest you this weekend in Shepherdstown. The Sam Shepard classic A Fool For Love is playing at the Shepherd University Theater Department's Studio Theater, while the Frank Center will be hosting special guest John Fedchock with their own Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, March 5.

Just outside of Shepherdstown at Scott Cawood's studio sits the area's only stationary Mardi Gras parade featuring Delta bluesmen and a brightly-colored rooster made from found and recycled objects by the local metal artist. His studio is open the first Saturday of every month from noon to 5:00; on March 5 the gumbo will be spicier than usual in anticipation of Fat Tuesday.

At the Inn, we got rooms open and our winter weekend discount is still in place: $35 off the weekend rate for any available room and no two-night minimum. We hope to see you!

Good-For-You Yummy Granola Recipe

We recently had a guest who was avoiding animal products in his diet for health reasons, but his wife thought he would relax his rules while staying at our B&B for two nights. When I told him that I had an option for him of some healthy vegan granola with almond milk, he took me up on the offer. He and I were both pleased with the results - he had a hearty and nutritious breakfast, and I had a satisfied guest! I always have a batch of this granola on hand for the mornings when someone prefers cereal and milk to our chef's choice entree. That doesn't happen too often, but the granola keeps really well in a zip-lock in the refrigerator.

Here's how you make about five cups of it:
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.

Dry ingredients - mix together in a large bowl
2 cups rolled or old-fashioned oats
1 cup steel-cut oats
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup flax seed
1/4 wheat germ

Wet ingredients & spices - mix together in a small bowl
1 individual cup unsweetened applesauce
4 tsps. agave nectar
1 Tbl. extra virgin olive oil
1/2 Tbl. ground cinnamon
1/2 Tbl. ground ginger
1/4 tsp salt

Mix wet ingredients and spices together first, then stir into dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are moistened.

Spread the mixture onto a baking dish (use one with sides). Bake for 35 - 40 minutes until evenly golden brown. Stir every 10 to 15 minutes while in oven to ensure even browning.
Add 1/4 cup dried fruit after the granola cools - I usually use dried cranberries or tart cherries, but raisins will work.

All Theater, All Weekend in Shepherdstown

If you have even a passing interest in live theater or film, this weekend (February 26 & 27) is the best weekend of the winter to be in Shepherdstown, WV. Here's the lineup:

The season teaser for the 2011 Contemporary American Th e ater Festival on Saturday, February 26 at the Studio Theater in Sara Cree Hall on Shepherd University's campus. CATF regulars Anderson Matthews, Michael Goodwin and John Lescault will be performing vignettes from each of the five plays with talented community members in a fun-filled evening starting with an opening reception at 7:00. Be the first on your block to see what CATF has to offer this year!
While CATF will be presenting a brand-new play from playwright/actor Sam Shepard this year, the Shepherd University Theater will be presenting a classic Shepard play, Fool For Love, starting this weekend. It focuses on the relationship between Eddie and May, filled with drama and angst - they can't live with or without each other.
The Opera House adds another Best Picture nominee, 127 Hours, to the schedule starting Friday. The King's Speech continues this weekend - we saw it last Sunday and can recommend it highly.
Last but not least, the Opera House will also be hosting a live broadcast of the Oscar event on the big screen at the movie theater on Sunday, February 27. Walk the red carpet to the live telecast; proceeds will benefit the Shepherd University Relay for Life to be held April 15-16.

While the Inn is full this weekend, Fool for Love runs through March 11 and the Opera House has great movies and/or live music almost every day of the week. President's Day in Shepherdstown, West Virginia

It looks like it's going to be a much nicer President's Day, weather-wise, in 2011 than it was in 2010. With clear weather and no snow on the ground, I'd like to suggest a tour of the Washington Heritage Trail, which winds throughout the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. We are just a short drive away from the D.C. and Baltimore area - perfect for an overnight trip.

Shepherdstown is a good place to base your travels, as there are a few sites on the trail - the Rumsey Monument, the Entler Hotel, and Morgan's Grove Park - that are right here. Around Jefferson County, several Washington family homes can be seen from the Trail (most are private and not open to the public) and the Zion Episcopal Church is the resting place for many important West Virginia citizens including over 70 members of the Washington family.

Another part of the Trail, Harpers Ferry National Park and the short climb to Jefferson Rock are open year-round. You can pick up trail brochures here at the Inn (our February holiday special of chocolates and movie tickets with a two-night stay is available through Monday) or at the Visitors Centers around the Panhandle.

West Virginia theatrics at the Full Circle Theater in Shepherdstown

In addition to the just-announced 21st season of the Contemporary American Theater Festival, our hometown of Shepherdstown is lucky to have a community theater doing thought-provoking original plays in a local venue.

Just in time for the three-day President's Day holiday weekend, the Full Circle Theater is performing a family drama by award-winning Harpers Ferry playwright Sean O'Leary titled Claudie Hukill. Called 'a compelling story' by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, this play (formerly titled Rain in the Hollows) lets us experience the lives of two brothers in a small West Virginia town torn by the competing virtues of conviction and humility.

Weekend performances are at 8:00 on Friday and Saturday and at 2:30 on Sunday. For ticket information, see their website.

I am taking a break from our regularly scheduled countdown to Valentine's Day because

It's Groundhog Day. If you didn't grow up in central Pennsylvania, this might not be as meaningful to you, but for me it is one under-appreciated holiday. Thanks, Bill Murray, for cluing everyone in to the phenomenon that is the celebration of Punxsutawney Phil (and in my case, Raystown Randy, the short-lived hometown attempt to exploit Groundhog Day).
It's my birthday. Easy to remember because of the holiday. Being as it is the big 5-0, my darling husband took me to Bedford S prings for a spa day (and two nights). We had an excellent dinner with family on Monday night and lounged most of the day yesterday in the spa.

Tomorrow, back to reality in Shepherdstown and the countdown!

I believe I've mentioned all the fun shops, yummy restaurants, and cool things to do here in Shepherdstown off and on in my blog. Over the next few weeks, I'm going to give you some specific hints that may help you celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14. Just short posts with some pics - a mini-series, if you will - to spotlight some of the unique offerings from our little hometown in West Virginia. You can look at my overview post from last year here, but this year you'll get a little more detail...

First up is a favorite jewelry shop for me, and for many of my guests - Plum. You'll notice that owner Cari Rosen has expanded her shop to carry items from some other local artists in addition to her own stamped jewelry. New Doings at the Shepherdstown Opera House

As many of you know, the old-timey Shepherdstown Opera House, just a block and a half away from the front door of the Inn, is one of our favorite places on German Street. A cozy atmosphere, popcorn with real butter and beer or wine at the concession, and the best in independent and foreign films - we truly love it! Well, a great spot in town has just got better - Lawrence Cumbo, a local documentary producer, recently bought the Opera House from long-time owner Rusty Berry and he's bringing some exciting additions to the old lineup.

Most weeks, there's live music on Thursday nights, movie showings added on Wednesdays, $5 admission to Monday night movies, and the Opera House Movie Club - $5 per month for two movies each Saturday geared to the youngsters (this week it's Flicka and Snoopy Come Home). The selection of beer, wine, sodas and snacks at the concession has been expanded. A few leather couches have been added to the front with a small dance area for the music shows. The vintage movie seats have been retained, so you still need to look for a pillow for your seat; otherwise, you risk having a seriously numb backside by the time the show's over. That's the Opera House we know and love!

Gluten-free macaroons at the Thomas Shepherd Inn

We have lots of guests these days who are avoiding gluten, and I have few recipes that I use over and over for snacks and breakfast items. I just made some of these today, for the afternoon cookie offering over the long weekend. Jim loves them, so he always hopes there are some left over that he can have with his morning coffee!

From the Splendid Table's How to Eat Supper (a highly recommended cookbook):

2 large eggs, well beaten
1/2 cup sugar
Generous pinch of salt
1 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract
3 cups sweetened shredded coconut

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread a sheet of parchment paper over a large cookie sheet, or butter the sheet.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, salt, and almond or vanilla extract. Blend in the coconut until it is completely moistened. This is not supposed to be a batter, but rather well-moistened clumps of coconut.

3. Drop generous teaspoonfuls onto the baking sheet, and bake them for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the macaroons are golden brown with crisp edges. Transfer them to a rack to cool.

Magnolia Gardens in Charleston, SC

We are taking a brief respite from the Inn this week and attending the PAII (Professional Association of Innkeepers International) conference in Charleston, SC. We took the opportunity to visit our friends Shellie and Tony in Rocky Mount, VA on the way down, and used our free day today to tour Magnolia Plantation and Gardens here in North Charleston. It's pretty chilly here, but we had a nice tour of the house - still owned by the Drayton family - and took a nice walk around the gardens. Only a few extremely hardy flowers are out, although the camellias will be arriving in full soon. Here's a photo - I think the gardens would be lovely in the spring. The spanish moss and the firethorn berries look very striking in the winter.

New Year's Eve Weekend at the Inn

Christmas in Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry

19 shopping days until Christmas, and the stores in Shepherdstown are well-stocked for gift-giving with one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry, locally-roasted coffee, and adorable shoes and clothes for all ages. The weekend of December 10th features a Saturday evening and Sunday matinee of the Nutcracker Ballet, performed at the Frank Center by the Shepherdstown School of Music and Dance. The Christmas Bazaar will also be open at the War Memorial Building on German Street on Saturday.

Old Tyme Christmas continues at Harpers Ferry on Dec. 11 and 12, with music, puppets, and a strolling Santa and Mrs. Clause. It's an easy drive from Shepherdstown! Pub Review - Mecklenburg Inn in Shepherdstown

My google alerts brought me an interesting and informational blog post from the American Public House Review, an extremely cool blog which features articles and reviews about pubs and taverns around the country, with an emphasis on history and tangential musings on music, hauntings, and sports. This particular post features Shepherdstown's own Mecklenburg Inn (once named one of the best bars in America by Esquire magazine) and O'Hurley's General Store, renowned for the Thursday night performances of heritage music in its Great Hall.

The Meck features a lovely garden, craft brews and Guinness on tap, and performances by local musicians many nights of the week. Also, a fat, friendly kitty with no tail who will gladly accommodate your lap if you want company. I hope the American Public House Review doesn't mind my using their photo :-) ! Have I mentioned that there are always lots of extra musical performances over the Christmas holidays, during Christmas in Shepherdstown, at the local pubs and at Shepherd University? Please come to town to shop, eat, hear some great music and stay at the Inn!

Shepherd University presents Bad Dates

This month he presents Bad Dates by Theresa Rebeck, the story of Haley Walker and her horrific and hilarious exploints in finding love in New York City. Bicycling season arrives in West Virginia

Last night the Inn was full, with five of six rooms here on bicycles going the distance on the C&O Canal Path or for the Potomac Pedalers Back Roads Century ride of 100 miles. They arrived at the Inn yesterday hot and tired, refreshed with showers, and then headed downtown to the Press Room for celebratory dinners.

We were able to get breakfast ready at 8:00 for an early start for the C&O group so they could hit the trail on their way to Williamsport. The 100-mile group relaxed with breakfast at our normal time of 8:30. What beautiful weather they all had, both yesterday and today! George Washington's Brother Slept Here

Well, not here at the Inn. This building didn't exist until 1868. But at two of the four properties which will be open for tour this Saturday for the third annual Washington Family Homes Tour, you can see where George visited his brothers Samuel and Charles. Harewood, Beallair, Claymont, and Happy Retreat - all part of the Washington family's legacy here in Jefferson County, West Virginia - will be open September 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can get an early start by sleeping at the Thomas Shepherd Inn B&B on Friday night - we'll take $25 off any room still available that night if you mention George Washington. He didn't sleep here, but you can!

Attention, fans of heritage music - a documentary film and the talented musicians behind it share the stage in Shepherdstown this Friday night! The Mountain Music Project film follows two traditional musicians, mandolinist Tara Linhardt and fiddler Danny Knicely, around the world as they follow the connections between Appalachian and Himalayan folk music and culture. The hour-long film will be followed by a concert with Danny, Tara and special guest Prem Raja.

Pay-what-you-can previews at the Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown this week

The 20th season of the Contemporary American Theater Festival @ Shepherd University starts in earnest this week, although rehearsals have been in full swing for a month. One of the little-known perks of being in Shepherdstown this week is that, on Wednesday and Thursday (July 7 and 8), CATF holds preview performances, unticketed, for whatever donation you might like to make. You can see two or three plays this way - there are some concurrent performances - and you can take advantage of eating out at a more relaxed pace without fighting the crowds.

One extra bonus is that we have availability at the Inn on those nights (we are pretty full during CATF, except for Sunday nights) and you can book a room at our weekday rates, which are lower than the weekend rates. We hope to see at least two of the plays during the previews - maybe Lidless and White People. Maybe we'll see you there!

Mini-Week Vacation in Chincoteague, VA

We took a little break week before last and headed over to Chincoteague, VA - home of Misty and wild ponies. I just loved those books when I was a young girl. I thought for sure I'd work at a horse stable some day. This was a do-nothing vacation, really, but not in the strictest sense of the word since we did spend money. None of the other stuff, though. We read books, explored the little downtown, and hung out on the bayfront deck of our rented condo. We checked out the local restaurants - mostly for fish and seafood, but also some awesome barbecue from Woody's Beach BBQ. The beach on Assateague was very pretty, although the hordes of mosquitoes that attacked us when we tried to take the Woodland trail to view the ponies were like a scene out of a horror movie. We retreated quickly to the car! All in all, it was some lovely down time before our busiest time of the year, and I will leave you with my favorite photo from it...

Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival in West Virginia

The first showing of the Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival is being held this weekend about five miles away, between here and Harpers Ferry. About 200 craftspeople (juried, so it's good stuff!) have been exhibiting in both June and September for many years - the tents always include a tasty selection of West Virginia Foods, and they've added winery tents as well. There's bluegrass music and string bands, plus the usual assortment of carnival food stands and the Anvil's stand featuring crab cakes. I'm always fascinated by the corn meal and flour that ground by a big puffing machine just inside the entrance.

Visit their website to get a coupon for $1 off the entrance fee - admission includes parking and the entertainment. Crafters are there Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We'll still have some rooms open - visit our website for our last-minute special on available rooms.

Tour the Beautiful Back Alley Gardens of Shepherdstown

The very popular Back Alley Garden Tour & Tea is being held a little earlier this year, with tours on both Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23. It is called the Back Alley Garden Tour after one of the unique features of the town - in the historic district, there are almost no front yards and all the garden space is in the back. Hence, the gardens are more viewable and accessible from the back alleys that wind throughout the town. They are truly beautiful with a wide variety of styles - a demonstration apiary (beehive) will be featured again this year. The tea will be held from 11 to 3 each day at the War Memorial Building on the corner of German and King Streets, next to the library, where tickets for the tea and tour may be purchased.

Our roses are out, as you can see from our picture, along with a few of the peonies. We are not on the tour but as a guest you are welcome to enjoy the shady view of the entire garden from our second floor porch at any time of the year! 20th season of CATF coming up in Shepherdstown

The Contemporary American Theater Festival's new season is described briefly in this Washington Post article today. While last season was relatively light-hearted (and I only say light-hearted as a relative term to the typical CATF plays...) this year will see a return to the edgy and dramatic, with a dash of pop musical thrown in. What a great way to celebrate 20 years in the business of bringing the newest plays to the oldest town in West Virginia!

We still have rooms available during the pay-what-you-can preview (a wonderful way to dip your toe into the CATF experience), a few weekday slots, and Sunday evenings (with $25 tickets) even though our weekends are booked at this time. You owe it to yourself to find out what all the buzz is about.

Cycling around Shepherstown

It seems that spring has finally arrived, and with it the beginning of bicycling season. I have posted about bicycling here before, in regards to through-bicyclists traveling along the C&O Canal Path just on the other side of the Potomac River from Shepherdstown. A recent article in the Shepherd University Picket reminded me that there are a variety of routes that can be done as day trips from Shepherdstown as well.

From road biking around Antietam Battlefield to rugged mountain biking near Boonsboro, MD - there is a day trip suited for both the casual bikers out to enjoy the scenery and the more serious cyclists training for an upcoming event. Pictured above are the bike racks secured in the back yard of the Inn; please note that they are outside and we do ask that your bikes remain outside during your stay. We have a tarp available for coverage if needed. Once you're done with your cycling trip, you can walk to any of a dozen fine restaurants, shops and our local movie theater from the Inn. Other than getting here, you won't need your car at all!

Cross-Country Hikers visit Shepherdstown

We had the most interesting walk-in (literally!) guests this week. It was a week we had planned to do some work - hello, 25-year-old wallpaper in powder room - because we had no scheduled guests but we ended up with one room every night anyway. Most were repeat business-type guests, but one couple found us while looking for a place to stay on their cross-country hike from Delaware to California.

Karen and Jerry are retired and live near Sonoma, the endpoint of their trip. You can read the story of their journey - Karen travels with a netbook - on a cool website, www.TrailJournals.com/KarenandJerry. They are following the American Discovery Trail using turn-by-turn guides and a hand-held GPS. Karen also has a great camera and a good eye, and has already posted some wonderful pics of the trip on her journal website.

They treated themselves to a comfy bed, a hot shower and a lovely dinner on German St. We weren't really ready to do a full breakfast in the morning but we popped some muffins in the oven, plus our signature spice biscotti, with orange juice and coffee in the morning while we had a wonderful chat about their adventures so far.

What a privilege it was to meet Karen and Jerry as they make their way across the country, and how lucky for us that they chose to stop in Shepherdstown. I really admire their determination and fortitude in their travels and hope for all the best conditions to grace them along the way. I aspire to be that fit and healthy when I retire!

Inn Sitting in Shepherdstown

We have just returned from 15 days away from the Inn, a combination of vacation/conference/meeting travel (more on that later) and I've got a guest poster today for the blog - our most capable innsitter, Sue Kalis of Two Hearts Inn-sitting:

Ok, truthfully, I have never even read a blog and now I have been asked to write one! Here goes, bear with me!

My adventure in Shepherdstown, WV at the Thomas Shepherd Inn began back in Sept. 2009 when Jeanne was trying to reach either my sister or myself to ask about our Inn-sitting services. We were both out on the road and not getting our messages, so by the time I reached Jeanne via phone I think she was ready to give up on us. It just so happened that I was going to be going right past her place the very next day and so I stopped in, we visited, and at some point she decided to hire me to come and Inn-sit for her B&B in Feb/March 2010.

Fast forward to Feb. 26th, 2010 and I find myself driving from MI to WV - this was probably the worst year to decide to drive - their weather up to this point had been horrible I believe! Of course I got caught in a snowstorm and it took me six hours to get from one side of the state to the other when it should have taken me three.

I finally arrived safe and sound and Jeanne and Jim welcomed me with open arms (no wonder they are great Innkeepers). They took me to one of the fine restaurants in Shepherdstown. We walked downtown with the snow falling and I could tell it was going to be a fun little town to explore.

My first week here I didn't have many guests so I had time to explore - what a great little town with several fine restaurants and shops. There is a great wine store, bakery, consignment shop (which I dropped some money in) and a very unique gift shop that has lots of great items that I have never seen before. There is also a great self guided walking tour of Shepherdstown and my favorite was the "Little House" - you've got to see it to believe it!

Jeanne told me that once the weather got nicer the phone would start ringing, and that is exactly what happened - the reservations started pouring in. All the guests were wonderful and they ranged from B&B newbies (never been to a B&B before) to guests who have been coming to the Thomas Shepherd Inn for 20 years! Made for some great conversations around the breakfast table.

Shepherdstown is surrounded by interesting towns also - Charles Town, Harpers Ferry and Martinsburg. There is a great chocolate shop in Martinsburg, as well as a community theatre. My sister and I tried to go see a play there after our guests raved about it, but with incoming guests it just didn't work out.

Even if you would hit a rainy weekend you could go to the local theatre to see a movie or just plan on hanging out at the B&B - it is a very fine place to spend time with your loved one - curl up in front of the fire with a book or watch one of the many movies from the movie library.

I'm sure there is something I forgot, but you'll just have to come to Shepherdstown and make your own memories!

It was such a restful time away from the Inn having Sue and her sister Ann to mind our 'baby', and I'm sure our guests didn't miss us. We're glad to be back home now, though, and will fill you in on our travels and upcoming events over the next few months.

Snowmageddon I/II Update from Shepherdstown, WV

Here's an update on the aftermath of Snowmageddon I & II here in Shepherdstown. The main streets have been plowed and the sidewalks are generally passable although you'll want to wear boots - some corners are tricky due to exuberant snowplows and watch out for falling ice and snow. There is even some parking on German Street - the town worked diligently all day Wednesday and they did an admirable job. Some shops and restaurants are open today (Thursday) - we expect all of them to be open for the weekend, as well as the Opera House for movies.

The Inn has a plowed parking lot and a shoveled sidewalk. We are open for business and we have rooms available due to some cancellations. If you are brave enough to come out, we and our business colleagues in town will welcome you!! It's been a tough February. To that end, we are offering a Snowmaggedon Special - $25 off a one-night stay and $50 off a two-night stay this weekend only (Feb. 12 - 14). Aren't you really ready to get out of the house?

More Thoughts before Valentine's Day

Have you ever heard of the 3/50 project? It's a project started to raise awareness of the independently owned businesses - 'saving the bricks and mortars our nation is built on.' The website describes how you can save your local economy...three stores at a time.

It's a simple concept really. Choose three independently owned businesses, the ones you'd miss most if they were gone. Stop by, say hello, pick up a little something for yourself or someone else.

If just half of the employed U.S. population spent $50 each month in these independent businesses (a total of $50, not $50 in each store), more than $42.6 billion in revenue would be generated. For every $50 spent in independently owned stores, $34 returns to the community. Compare that to only $21.50 returning to the community at a national chain, or $0 from an online purchase.

Here's how you could shop in Shepherdstown for Valentine's Day:
- Buy 1/2 lb. Shepherdstown Blend coffee at the German Street Coffee & Candlery, plus some romantic scented candles for the evening. How about a nice bottle of wine or some gourmet cheese and crackers to go with?

There are a million more ideas within our three little blocks of shops in Sheherdstown. Every store on German Street and Princess Street is independently-owned. Most of the restaurants and two of the lodging options are as well. Make this your year to embrace the 3/50 project whenever you shop. We small business owners will be glad you did!
